about

This song is based on the folk tale "Vasalisa" which I read about in the book "Women Who Run With the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype" by Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Ph.D.

lyrics

I’m traveling, I’m tired, but I’m traveling forward

Step Mother said “Go and find the fire,
the forest sorceress holds it.
She holds the embers in the palms of her hands
and with a grin she sent me out

The horsemen come in white, red, and black,
to bring me the day shuffle me into night
as I find the sorceress, she bids me to stay
I know what I know not, to not know is bliss

I’m traveling, I’m tired, but I’m traveling forward

“Grandma” I say “could you give me the fire”
And with a laugh she chided
“Clean, cook, wash, scrub, sift these poppies and corn,
in the morning I could grant thee”

As all was done, she perplexed, asked me how
in calm tones “My mother’s blessing”
with a scoff she sent me home with a skull full of fire
and my step mother burned with the coals
and my step sisters burned with the coals
and my father was freed from the unknown

I’m traveling, I’m tired, but I’m traveling forward

She's hiding in me, she's hiding within me
